A hickey.

I wake up to alarms blaring.

I’m still in Carson’s room. Surprisingly, I fell asleep here last night. And I’m thinking we’re being woken up for midnight drills, until I see the light shining through the window.

The alarm stops, and it’s followed by an announcement that is almost as loud.

“School today is canceled for our monthly marathon. Remember, this is mandatory. The amount of time you spend running is completely up to you. Every student needs to be downstairs in ten minutes.” The loudspeaker makes a final sequel before shutting off.

Carson grunts. “This school is torture.”

“Trust me, this school is still better than being trained by my parents.” I push myself out of bed. “I’m going to go back to my room and get ready.”

“Okay. See you out there,” he mumbles, burying his face in his pillow.

I walk out of his room, running toward my own dorm. I have ten minutes to get the fastest shower of my life, because there is no way I am going to run a marathon smelling like sex.

Uh...

I can’t believe I did that!

I had sex with freaking Carson. The traitor.

There is seriously something wrong with me. I’m mixed up in my head. This just isn’t right.

But then again, I’ve always known that I’m a complete head case. This doesn’t really change things.

I get a quick shower, not bothering to wash my hair, and I get dressed, brush my teeth, and put my hair into a messy bun at record speed. I get downstairs with literally seconds to spare.

Luke narrows his eyes at me. “Do you have a hickey?”

I reach a hand up to feel my neck, like I can feel a hickey. Which, of course, I can’t.

I pull out my phone and turn on my camera to look at my neck. Sure enough, there is a bright purple hickey on my neck.

I am going to murder Carson.

I rub at it, wishing I could just rub it away. I want this stupid thing gone.

I shove my phone back into the pocket of my hoodie and groan. “Fucking great.”

Luke just laughs. “Want to be my running buddy?”

I nod. “Please.”

I’m relieved that Luke isn’t upset about the hickey. He knows that he’s not the one who put it there. But I worried that after what happened yesterday in the shower, he would be jealous or possessive or something. I’m glad that’s not the case.

I feel like Luke was genuine when he said he doesn’t care if I date other guys and him too. He knows how I feel about the others, and he’s okay with it. I just am so paranoid that things are going to change. Someday, I am going to be having sex with Jesse and maybe Luke will walk in and see. And I am so scared that they will fight or that I’ll get broken up with. And I wouldn’t even blame Luke for dumping me. I’d dump me too.

The marathon starts after Jasmine French gives the students a brief talk about how they are watching and they will know if we cheat.
